Advocacy with Bangladesh National Human Rights Commission for establishing sex workers rights

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is the national advocacy institution for human rights promotion and protection in Bangladesh. Through the SWASA project Naripokkho represented SHONGHOTI (a platform of 46 humanitarian organizations of Bangladesh) to NHRC for advocating the establishment and protection of sex worker’s rights. This is for the first time NHRC engaged themselves in a meeting where sex workers represented themselves and shared their comprehensive overview of the challenges encountered by sex workers and shared their experiences. In response, the NHRC committed to address key areas which are NID card acquisition, revising the old-age allowance policy with a particular focus on reducing the age threshold from 35 to 40 for sex workers, birth registration only in the name of mother. Moreover, NHRC suggested to engage multiple fronts of our society as acknowledging sex work as a legitimate profession.
